Indian secularism differs from Western models. Rather than strict separation of church and state, the Indian Constitution adopts principled distance — the state can intervene in religious matters to protect civil rights and social reform, as it did in banning untouchability and reforming Hindu personal law. This "equal respect for all religions" model has been challenged from both majoritarian directions (religion in public life) and minority rights perspectives (uniform civil code debates).
