The qualifying English paper tests serious discursive reading and precise written expression. Précis writing, comprehension of dense analytical prose, vocabulary, and grammatical precision. Failure here disqualifies the entire Mains attempt regardless of GS scores — it is a gateway, not a tiebreaker.
